Starting July 1, 2025, new training requirements for obtaining a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) permit will go into effect as part of House Bill 24-1174, signed into law in 2024. These changes are designed to enhance safety and standardize the training process across the state.
What Are the New Requirements?

- Training Certificate
- Applicants must present an original certificate dated within one year of their application appointment. Photocopies or older certificates will not be accepted.
- Written Test
- Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 80% on a written test covering firearm safety and state laws.
- Live-Fire Training
- Applicants must pass a live-fire test with at least 70% accuracy to demonstrate safe and competent firearm handling.
- Training Length
- New applicant classes must be at least 8 hours long.
- Renewal applicant classes must be at least 2 hours long.
- Instructor Verification
- Instructors must be verified by the Sheriff’s Office in the jurisdiction where they conduct the majority of their training.
Important Notes
- These new requirements apply to all applications submitted on or after July 1, 2025.
- If you plan to apply before this date, you may still complete training under the current 4-hour curriculum, provided your application is submitted before July 1st.
- Legal Heat will begin offering the new 8-hour curriculum classes starting in May 2025 to ensure applicants meet the updated standards.
We encourage all applicants to plan ahead, as some counties are experiencing extended wait times for application appointments. For more information or to register for a class, please contact us or visit our website.
