Students MUST bring the following items to the class:

DO NOT bring firearms or ammunition into the classroom

First, your gun should be completely unloaded and in a secure gun case. Magazines unloaded as well. Your gun and ammunition must be securely locked in your vehicle or otherwise secured during any classroom portion of the day(s). The only time guns are to be loaded is at the firing line of the gun range, after your instructor has directed you to load. All other times they are to be completely unloaded.

Items to bring to the range include:
(Only those with a FOID card may bring their own firearms.  If you do not have a FOID card, you may rent a firearm from the range under the supervision of the instructor.)

• A fully functioning UNLOADED, CASED semiautomatic pistol or revolver. No antiques.
• No steel cased, armor piercing or tracer ammo permitted.
• Please bring a minimum of 50 rounds
• Ear and eye protection.
• An auto-loader or speed-loader if preferred, but note: you must show your instructor you can successfully manually load and unload your firearm as part of the range requirement.
• Comfortable (range of motion) clothes. No V-necks or low-cut shirts.
• Flat-soled shoes with good traction and support that completely enclose your feet.  No flip-flops, sandals or open footwear.
• Snacks and drinks are permitted but will not be allowed at the firing line.

During the range portion, hands-on firearm instruction is provided. Basic marksmanship is taught to the skill level of the student: stance, grip, sight alignment, breath control, trigger control and follow-through are highlighted as fundamentals to your accuracy.  Live-fire qualification is required with a minimum of 30 rounds. This will consist of 10 rounds from a distance of 5 yards; 10 rounds from a distance of 7 yards, and 10 rounds from a distance of 10 yards at a B-27 silhouette target approved by the Illinois State Police.

The range fee for this class is included in your course fee.

The Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card is a card issued by the Illinois State Police to residents of Illinois who wish to own or possess firearms. The FOID card serves as a form of identification for firearms owners and is required to legally purchase or possess firearms or ammunition in the state of Illinois.

In order to obtain a FOID card, an individual must:

• Be at least 21 years of age
• Be a resident of Illinois or a member of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Illinois
• Not be prohibited by law from owning or possessing a firearm
• Not have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors
• Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol
• Not be mentally disabled or have been a patient in a mental health facility in the past 5 years
• Not be subject to an order of protection
• Not have been dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces
• Not be the subject of any pending arrest warrants
• Not have any outstanding judgments for unpaid fines or fees

Once the application process is completed, the Illinois State Police will conduct a background check and if the applicant meets all the requirements, the FOID card will be issued. The FOID card is valid for 10 years and must be renewed before its expiration date.

It's important to note that the FOID card is separate from the Concealed Carry License (CCL), and while having a FOID card is a requirement to have a CCL, having a CCL does not necessarily mean you have a FOID card. Please note, possession of a FOID card does not necessarily authorize a person to carry a concealed firearm in Illinois.

NOTE: Where a state’s permit is honored (often called “reciprocity”) will change from time to time. Having multiple state carry permits can help cover the gaps in any potential changes. As such, we always suggest checking the Legal Heat App or purchasing our 50 State Guide To Firearm Laws and Regulations book before you travel, to ensure your permit is valid in the locations you will be visiting.

Utah Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP) Fee: 

State application fees of $63.25 (non-resident), $53.25 (resident) for the first 5 years is the initial application fee and $25.75 every 5 years after to renew.  Utah permits can be applied for by mail. These forms are provided for you during class and your instructor will assist you in completing them. Application fees are paid directly to the state at the time the application is submitted and are not included in the class fee.

Utah Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP) Renewal Fee:

To renew online, please go to https://secure.utah.gov/concealed-firearms. To renew over the internet the total cost is $20.75 for Utah residents or $25.75 for out-of-state permit holders.  There is a $0.75 convenience fee to renew over the internet.

Additional Information:

After receiving a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP), you are allowed to carry a concealed firearm in most places within the state of Utah and in other states that have reciprocity agreements with Utah. However, there are certain places where carrying a concealed firearm is not allowed, even with a CFP. These include:

• Federal buildings, such as post offices and courthouses
• K-12 schools, and school grounds
• Polling places on election day
• Nuclear power plants
• Game refuges, and wildlife management areas
• Indian reservations, unless you have written permission from the tribe
• Places where carrying firearms is prohibited by federal law
• Any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by state law or regulation

It's important to note that private property owners have the right to prohibit firearms on their property, so it's important to be aware of any posted signs or verbal notices indicating that firearms are not allowed.

It is also important to note that if you are a law enforcement officer or a retired law enforcement officer, you may have additional places where you can carry your firearm and you may have additional rights to carry your firearm.

Utah has Concealed Carry Reciprocity agreements with a number of other states, which means that if you have a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP), you may be able to legally carry your firearm in those states as well. However, it's important to check the laws of the state you're planning to visit or travel through to make sure you're in compliance with their laws, as laws and regulations may vary from state to state.

Utah has reciprocity agreements with the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Wyoming.

It's important to note that laws and regulations are subject to change, so it's important to check for updates and for any new agreements or changes in laws that may have been made. It's also important to check if the state you're planning to visit has any restrictions or additional requirements for non-residents and out-of-state permit holders.

Fingerprinting:

• Fingerprinting Services MAY be available during class depending on location and local requirements.
• Legal Heat does NOT provide this service, but Fingerprinting Services are offered through the local instructor directly.
• Any issues with fingerprinting services or DIY kits should be directed to the providing instructor, not Legal Heat

When applying for your home state permit your local issuing agency may want to fingerprint you. Your instructor will provide full details during class.

In classes that include the AZ and UT certifications, instructors MAY be offering DIY Fingerprint Kits for sale that come with instructions, ink strips and enough fingerprint cards to apply for both permits.
